8. Texas Tech Red Raiders

There is a thin margin between the No. 8 and 7 spots on this list for Texas football. The middle of the pack is so difficult to figure out this season and the separation could start to emerge within the first two weeks of conference play.

Since there’s nothing to work off yet for the Longhorns, I will take the uncertainty any team with a new head coach has and run with it. The Longhorns could take complete advantage of a team like the Texas Tech Red Raiders that has injury issues at key positions already and is really trying to figure out their identity.

There is a lot of promise under former Utah State Aggies head coach Matt Wells as we move into Big 12 play. But a loss to the former Heisman contending quarterback Khalil Tate and the Arizona Wildcats is no way to kick things off before the start of Big 12 play. Texas Tech lost standout sophomore quarterback Alan Bowman for at least three weeks in that loss to Arizona.

What also doesn’t help the Red Raiders is the fact that they get the Longhorns in the final week of the regular season. There won’t be a Texas team overlooking their final opponent, since it is the in-state conference foe Texas Tech, like they were against lowly Kansas and a departing head coach in David Beaty last season.
