5. Previous Big 12 trends don’t matter

The confusing patterns of the Texas football program this season didn’t fade away in this loss to Iowa State. The Longhorns entered this game with a 2-0 record under Herman’s direction. They actually controlled those two previous meetings against two good Iowa State teams to the tune of two possession victories.

This looked like a completely different Texas squad in this loss to Iowa State. Getting healthier and coming off the momentum from a big home win at home at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium over then-ranked No. 16 Kansas State didn’t help against the Cyclone at all.

Maybe this Longhorns team is just as tumultuous over the course of the past three seasons as they look on the field week-by-week. The trend of Herman playing up and down to the competition hasn’t gone away during Big 12 play this season. Refer back to the nailbiter of a 50-48 home win over head coach Les Miles and the Kansas Jayhawks and you can understand that trend.

However, losing to Iowa State wasn’t the only trend that Texas reversed in Big 12 play this season. Beating the Oklahoma State Cowboys wasn’t something that the Longhorns were accustomed to. That is the same with losing in the fashion they did to the TCU Horned Frogs or beating Kansas State. This is a weird season in the Big 12 to say the very least.
