3. Devin Duvernay needs help

This might be the biggest underreaction on a list full of overreactions.

Texas football is going to need help in the receiving corps beyond the likes of senior wide receiver Devin Duvernay, especially when fellow senior star wideout Collin Johnson misses so much game action due to injury.

This game got Duvernay over the 1,000 receiving yard mark on the season. He now has more than 85 receptions for 1,017 yards and seven touchdowns (eight total touchdowns). Meanwhile, Johnson has less than 500 receiving yards for two touchdowns on what looked to be a breakout senior season for him.

Moreover, the problem for the Longhorns is the fact that the rest of the receiving corps beyond Johnson and Duvernay is notoriously young and unreliable. Sophomore Brennan Eagles and freshman Jake Smith are about the best Texas has outside of Johnson and Duvernay. The drop-happy games that Eagles has from time-to-time, and frequent miscommunications with Smith combine for an inconsistent set of passing targets for junior quarterback Sam Ehlinger.

In this game alone, Duvernay had nine receptions for 107 receiving yards and no touchdowns. He wasn’t looked to much in the redzone, but he did manage to continue his streak in every game this season of racking up at least six catches. That’s an amazing trend considering how much the Longhorns needed a receiver to step up in place of the often-injured Johnson.
