5. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Bowl game: Camping World Bowl

It might get lopsided if the Texas football program were to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the postseason. But it would have to be the Camping World Bowl that the Longhorns and Fighting Irish would be squaring off in. This has to be about the best game the Longhorns could face in any bowl game this year.

The last time that Texas and Notre Dame met on the gridiron was back in that historic 2016 meeting that ended in one of the most exciting overtime finishes in recent memory in college football. Texas took down Notre Dame on a final touchdown run by former quarterback Tyrone Swoopes to walk out of Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium with a win.

An interesting quarterback matchup would ensue in a game between Texas and Notre Dame, as would the coaching matchup. Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly found himself on the hot seat before in South Bend, which Herman could be working his way onto now on the Forty Acres. Junior Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger also sits in much hotter water at the moment than Notre Dame’s Ian Book.

Notre Dame currently holds a record of 9-2 after their big win over the Boston College Eagles in Week 13. They’re only two losses came at the hands of top 13 ranked teams in the latest College Football Playoff Rankings, the Michigan Wolverines and Georgia. And that loss to Georgia came by a one possession margin.
