1. Texas A&M Aggies

Bowl game: Texas Bowl

If there was more of a distance that I could put for the Texas football program on this list for any opponent other than the rival Texas A&M Aggies, there would be a sizable one. But head coach Jimbo Fisher and Texas A&M are actually sitting in position to land against a team like the Longhorns in their bowl game.

Texas A&M would need to upend the No. 2 ranked LSU Tigers in Week 14 at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge (good luck). While the Aggies did get the best of LSU last season in a wild seven-overtime affair at Kyle Field in College Station, the same isn’t likely to happen again this time around. In fact, if there’s any possible way that Texas A&M’s offense could hang with LSU’s I would be truly impressed.

However, the revival of the Lone Star Showdown on the gridiron in the same month that the Aggies and Longhorns are set to meet on the hardwood would be groundbreaking. A successful bowl game matchup might even get some movement in these two athletic departments restarting negotiations toward a scheduling for a regular season series.

Texas and Texas A&M haven’t met on the gridiron since the 2011 season. And it wouldn’t be at least until the 2025 campaign that Texas and Texas A&M would possibly be able to schedule something during the regular season.

At this point, it looks as if the Lone Star Showdown in football would have to be reignited in the postseason.
