Texas Football: 3 best candidates to be next wide receivers coach
There are numerous interesting candidates that the Texas football program could reach out to be the next wide receivers coach.
A good portion of the coaching staff for the Texas football program was turned over on Dec. 1. Head Texas football coach Tom Herman came through on the suspicion that he would remove a lot of the coaching staff he had in place through the end of the 2019 regular season.
The list of coaches removed from their positions, whether it be fired or demoted, was pretty lengthy. That list included both of the Texas coordinators. Offensive coordinator Tim Beck was demoted to just the quarterbacks coach and defensive coordinator Todd Orlando was fired entirely.
Two of the pieces included in the removal of portions of his coaching staff were the co-wide receivers coaches Drew Mehringer and Corby Meekins. Apparently if Mehringer was still on the staff by 9 a.m. on Dec. 2, there would’ve been problems internally for Texas too.
Meekins was downgraded to an off-the-field administrative role and Mehringer was let go entirely. It seem as if there was going to be a plethora of Texas wide receivers putting their names in the NCAA Transfer Portal if Mehringer was to stick around any longer.
There is now this window of opportunity that Herman has at the beginning of the coaching carousel to hand pick his assistant staff for a second time around. A lot of coaches wouldn’t be put in this situation for a second chance. But that’s exactly the chance that Herman has right now.
Beyond the picks that Herman will have for his two coordinator positions, which will be followed attentively by the fans and media, there’s going to be a lot of eye balls on what he does for his positional coaches.
Here’s a look into the three best potential selections for the Texas Longhorns football program as they try to pick their next wide receivers coach.
