1. Ra’Shaad Samples

Current Position: SMU assistant coach

The Texas football program could also seek out a former member of the staff under Herman to find their next wide receivers coach. The favorite on social media thus far appears to be the SMU Mustangs assistant coach and former Texas recruiting assistant and analyst Ra’Shaad Samples.

After splitting his collegiate career between the Houston Cougars and Oklahoma State (largely to no avail of actual playing time), Samples became a much more successful coach. Samples is thriving immediately as an assistant coach in the state of Texas. That was much better than his 11 career receiving yards he had between his time with Oklahoma State and Houston.

Samples knows how to recruit the state of Texas, and he’s a rising star in the college coaching ranks. He left the Texas staff for a full-time paid coaching gig under head coach Sonny Dykes and SMU before the start of the 2019 season. It would also be a natural jump for Samples to go from SMU assistant to Texas wide receivers coach with how fast his star is rising.

The connection between Samples and Texas recruiting director Bryan Carrington and his immediate success as an assistant with SMU should be reason enough for Herman to consider him for this job opening. Samples is proving he can coach the position and that he would have an immediate connection with the valuable recruiting territory that is the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.
