Texas Basketball: 2010’s All-Decade Longhorns Team
Point guard: J’Covan Brown (2009-2012)
An up and down run at the point guard position for both Smart and Barnes over the last decade started out pretty well under former three-year vet J’Covan Brown. Steady progress was the name of the game for one of the leading career Longhorns guards in terms of win shares over the last decade.
The peak of Brown’s career on the Forty Acres, at least in terms of individual accolades, came during the 2011-12 season. He was an All-Big 12 honoree and made the All-Big 12 Tournament team that season. That was also his final season of his college career. He declared for the 2012 NBA Draft early after his junior campaign ended.
However, that junior season was magical for Brown. In that All-Big 12 worthy campaign, Brown registered 20.1 points per game, 3.8 assists, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.2 steals. He also shot around 45 percent from the field and 37 percent from three-point range. Those are some of the best numbers during any individual season by any Texas point guard in the last decade.
The next step in Brown’s basketball career after he declared for the 2012 NBA Draft mostly involved playing overseas. He had a stint with the New York Knicks in the Las Vegas NBA Summer League, but didn’t get any chances in the NBA after that. But he does have a solid three-season career with the Longhorns to hang his hat on.
