Texas Football: Could Utah St transfer QB Jordan Love land in the Big 12
Big NCAA Transfer Portal news dropped on Dec. 9, with a potential quarterback that could be facing up against the Texas football program next season.
There’s big NCAA Transfer Portal news drops of late. Once the regular season and conference championship week runs up, the transfer portal starts to have a lot more names show up in there. And one of the latest potential transfers that could shake up the college football landscape emerged on Dec. 9. And it could have an impact on the Texas football program.
According to a report from 247Sports, the Utah State Aggies star junior quarterback Jordan Love could be considering a transfer to a more prominent school if he doesn’t decide to declare early for the 2020 NFL Draft. That report indicates that the Oklahoma Sooners could be where Love decides to take his talents in 2020.
Among the landing spots mentioned for Love if he does elect to put his name in the transfer portal and leave Utah State includes the Houston Cougars, Texas Tech Red Raiders, and Oklahoma. But the original report that mentioned all those potential landing spots for Love came from Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports on Twitter.
Wetzel also mentioned in his Tweet that the NFL Draft grades that Love gets for 2020 could play a big role on his transfer decision for next offseason. The 2020 NFL Draft quarterback class is deep, but there are also a handful of emerging prominent signal callers for 2021. That list includes Trevor Lawrence of the Clemson Tigers at the top.
However, Love would be taking more than 8,000 career passing yards and 66 total touchdowns to a possible destination either in the Big 12, the state of Texas, or both. Although big expectations didn’t play out to much for Love this season, as he managed just 17 passing touchdowns compared to 16 interceptions with Utah State.
And while the Texas Longhorns football program doesn’t look like a viable landing spot for Love next year, him landing with a Big 12 school would clearly have an impact that carries to the Forty Acres. Junior Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger should be returning for his senior season with a lot on the line for head coach Tom Herman.
But it does make a lot of sense for Love to take his talents to a number of Big 12 programs. Oklahoma will be losing its third consecutive possible Heisman winning starting quarterback next offseason. Head coach Lincoln Riley had this Oklahoma offense loaded with back-to-back Heisman winning quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray. And Jalen Hurts was named a Heisman finalist this afternoon.
There is a lot of appeal to play for Riley and the Sooners with the way transfer quarterbacks worked out the last three times. It also makes a lot of sense for him to land with former Utah State head coach Matt Wells as he now heads up the Texas Tech program.
And there is another former Big 12 head coach with the Houston program, Dana Holgorsen. All three offensive systems fit the sneaky dual-threat ability of Love well. Other programs around Texas and the Big 12 that could be good fits for Love include the North Texas Mean Green and West Virginia Mountaineers.
The transfer portal news is about to get very heavy, and it is worth following for Longhorn football fans. Big-time transfer names could emerge each passing week. But Love would be one of the heavy hitters of any transfer quarterback that could enter the portal during the offseason.
