1. Rhett Lashlee

Current Position: SMU offensive coordinator

Among all the offensive coordinator candidates on this list (or that comes to mind immediately) for the Texas football program to pursue entering the offseason, the best that would be coming from the Group of Five ranks is the SMU Mustangs offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Rhett Lashlee. There are relevant ties all over the place for Lashlee and the Longhorns.

The connections start with Lashlee and the former Longhorns starting quarterback Shane Buechele. Last offseason, Buechele entered the NCAA Transfer Portal once he was beat out for good in the quarterback battle by Texas junior Sam Ehlinger. Lashlee would be familiar with past Texas quarterbacks, and his balanced offensive system would combine well with Herman’s concepts.

SMU also has a former Longhorn assistant on staff with rising recruiting superstar Ra’Shaad Samples. Although he reaffirmed his commitment to the SMU program earlier this year, landing Lashlee might help Samples get more interest in coming back to the Forty Acres as their next wide receivers coach.

Moreover, SMU had a breakthrough season under head coach Sonny Dykes. It’s a shame that they didn’t finish on a high-note, getting thoroughly defeated in the Boca Raton Bowl against Kiffin and the FAU Owls by the final score of 52-28. The Mustangs still finished up with a record of 10-3, and ranked seventh in the nation in points per game (41.8).
