Defensive backs

Xavion Alford (Shadow Creek), 4-Star S

Among the three signees that will fill into the defensive backfield for the 2020 Texas football recruiting class, the highest rated is the four-star Shadow Creek safety Xavion Alford. The 6-foot and 185 pound Pearland, TX, native ranks as the nation’s No. 133 2020 high school prospect and the No. 9 at his position.

Speed and ball skills are the name of the game for Alford. He should be an interesting fit (in a very positive way) with this Longhorns defense in the aggressive schemes of Ash.

Kitan Crawford (John Tyler), 4-Star CB

One of the most important commits that Herman tried to hang onto in the midst of all his recent coaching changes was the four-star John Tyler cornerback Kitan Crawford. The nation’s No. 159 2020 high school prospect and the No. 11 cornerback brings much needed depth to the table where the Longhorns struggled this season.

Originally a three-star running back commit, Crawford brings a ton of football intelligence and awareness, speed, and versatility to the table. He’s a perfect prototypical Herman recruit.

Jerrin Thompson (Lufkin), 4-Star S

All three defensive back signees Texas had in their 2020 recruiting class ranked very close together in the national recruiting rankings. But the last of the three defensive back signees is four-star Lufkin 6-foot-0.5 and 185 pound safety Jerrin Thompson. The nation’s No. 165 2020 high school prospect and the No. 15 safety is a hard-hitter that brings a very different physical presence to the table compared to his positional counterpart Alford.

Grade: B+
