Texas Football: Ranking every starting quarterback from the last decade
If the Texas football fan base has a lot of “what-if” questions pertaining to the quarterback stint of Heard a few years back, then there should be a lot of wonderment about what David Ash could’ve been. Injuries ravaged Ash’s career on the Forty Acres, and caused him to play in just four total games in the final two years of his college career.
When Ash was healthy and had at least a decent offensive line in front of him, he was a very productive quarterback. The growing pains were tough for Ash as a true freshman, but he quickly learned and became an impact quarterback in the Big 12 during his sophomore and part of hi junior seasons.
Ash completed around 65 percent of his passing attempts for around 3,500 passing yards, 26 passing touchdowns, and just 10 interceptions, between his second and third years with the Longhorns. He was knocked out for the season after just one game during his senior campaign, which ended his career on a very somber note.
Also a capable runner, Ash finished up his Texas career with more than 400 rushing yards and six scores. He actually averaged more than four yards per carry during his junior season. But that underrated dual-threat ability might’ve done more harm than good, given all the concussion problems he had in college.
