As the second former Texas football starting quarterback on this list that was eventually beat out and transferred to the SMU program to find more success, the former four-star recruit Shane Buechele is actually beloved by fans on the Forty Acres.

Whereas Gilbert transferred out of the Texas program with harsh feelings and words following him from the Longhorns fans, Buechele linked up with SMU feeling nothing but love coming out of Austin. That is largely because Buechele had a rather successful stint on a offense that was improving from 2016-2018.

Buechele had a sensational true freshman campaign statistically, where he finished up with 2,958 passing yards and 21 touchdowns with just 11 interceptions. He also added more than 150 rushing yards and two touchdowns as a true freshman.

Once Ehlinger started to get more looks behind center under Herman in 2017, Buechele started to regress a bit. He only had 1,405 passing yards and seven touchdowns, with four interceptions, in 2017. His role really dwindled down when he was firmly beat for the starting quarterback job by Ehlinger in 2018. Although, he did win two games for the Longhorns in key spots where Ehlinger got injured (against the Iowa State Cyclones and Baylor).

After transferring to SMU, Buechele had a career year as a redshirt junior. He registered 3,929 passing yards and 36 total touchdowns with just 10 picks. He’s now one of the active FBS leaders in career passing yards and touchdowns (with 8,565 and 64 respectively).
