Texas Football: Ranking every starting quarterback from the last decade
The first Texas football starting quarterback to really put it all together since the run of legendary signal callers ended on the Forty Acres after the turn of the decade is Ehlinger. “Bam Bam Sam” didn’t have his best outing during the 2019 regular season, but that was by the standard that he established down the stretch in 2017 and all throughout 2018.
Ehlinger’s production does rival that of Colt McCoy and fellow Longhorn legend quarterback Vince Young. While he is likely to not match Young’s total of career rushing yards, Ehlinger could match his career total in rushing touchdowns. Young had 3,175 career rushing yards and 37 touchdowns in three years as the Texas starting quarterback.
The two feats that VY reached that Ehlinger has not yet included getting named as a Heisman finalist, and most of all winning a BCS National Championship. Ehlinger did beat the USC Trojans, but not in the same spot that VY did to cap off the 2005 college football season. Young finished second in the Heisman voting in 2005, and Ehlinger came into the 2019 campaign with legit Heisman hype.
Up to this point, Ehlinger has 8,669 career passing yards and 65 touchdowns to just 21 interceptions. He’s also completed around 65 percent of his passes over the course of the last two seasons. He’ll use the Alamo Bowl and his senior season to chase the mark of career rushing touchdowns that VY posted. Ehlinger currently sits at 24 for his career.
