Texas Football: 3 OC’s who could’ve been considered over Mike Yurcich
1. Kalen DeBoer
Current Position: Fresno State head coach (just hired from Indiana)
The former Indiana Hoosiers offensive coordinator Kalen DeBoer didn’t last long until he was hired away to a former coaching destination of his. DeBoer helped the Indiana offense improve rapidly this season, including their best finish in Big Ten play, through the 2019 regular season, over the course of the last decade.
The progression that DeBoer made in his sole season as the Indiana offensive coordinator under head coach Tom Allen was very impressive. Indiana averaged about eight more points per game this season than they did last after the addition of DeBoer to the coaching staff. The Hoosiers put up 32.6 points per game, good for the No. 41 spot in the FBS.
It was the breakthroughs that Indiana saw in the passing game that were really remarkable. Indiana saw two different quarterbacks combine to average just shy of 310 passing yards per game, 2.0 touchdowns through the air, and a completion percentage above 68. Peyton Ramsey and Michael Penix Jr. both more than doubled the number of passing touchdowns they had compared to interceptions.
Entering the offseason, former Fresno State Bulldogs head coach Jeff Tedford announced he would step down after three years at the helm. Fresno State brought back their former assistant coach DeBoer to be their next head coach to reportedly replace Tedford on Dec. 17.
Herman and the Longhorns would really have to buy into what DeBoer brought to the table if they were to think way outside the box to hire him to be their next offensive coordinator. This was obviously an under-the-radar hindsight consideration for the offensive coordinator job since DeBoer was hired more than one week ago to be Fresno State’s next head coach.
