Texas Football: Both Oklahoma schools making Big 12 look terrible
There’s three days before the Texas football program takes part in the Alamo Bowl against the Utah Utes, and the Big 12 is not looking good so far.
The Texas football program will be on the latter end of the Big 12 bowl games this postseason. Texas gets the No. 11 ranked Utah Utes in the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio on New Year’s Eve. Utah does look to outmatch Texas on paper, but both head coaches have solid records in the postseason. Head Texas football coach Tom Herman boasts a career record of 3-1 in bowl games. Meanwhile, Utes head coach Kyle Whittingham has a career record of 11-2 in bowl games.
But the Texas Longhorns football program didn’t find itself in as significant of a bowl as two other Big 12 teams. The Big 12 runner-up Baylor Bears are set to take part in the bowl game the Longhorns landed in last season, the Sugar Bowl against the Georgia Bulldogs. And the Big 12 Champion Oklahoma Sooners are currently taking on the SEC Champion LSU Tigers in the Peach Bowl in the College Football Playoff Semifinals.
Oklahoma got off to a rough start in that Peach Bowl showdown against LSU. For once, the Heisman winning quarterback wasn’t a Sooner. Superstar senior LSU quarterback, and the Heisman winner Joe Burrow, got the Tigers off to a hot start in the Peach Bowl taking a 35-7 lead after the first quarter.
Burrow had a whopping seven passing touchdowns in the first half alone. That let the Tigers score 49 points in the first half, sending first-year Oklahoma defensive coordinator Alex Grinch with a lot to think about heading into the locker room. LSU passing game coordinator Joe Brady really had his way with the Oklahoma defense in the first half.
LSU wide receiver Justin Jefferson had nearly 200 receiving yards and four touchdown catches in the first half too. That gave the Tigers just shy of 500 total yards heading into the locker room at halftime.
Even though they are a rival of the Longhorns, I have to say that Oklahoma is a good football team and this is a testament to how good this LSU offense really is this season. It’s amazing how the Longhorns even came close to beating LSU back in Week 2 of the regular season.
However, Oklahoma did need to put up a better performance than they did in this College Football Playoff game. Given the way things looked heading into halftime, Oklahoma had pretty much no chance of winning this game.
LSU had a commanding 49-14 lead at half.
Wow, just wow.
As bad as this game was halftime, with that 35-point lead in favor of LSU, it looks to be one narrative in an ongoing storyline of Oklahoma schools losing to the SEC in their bowl games.
The Oklahoma State Cowboys had a good shot at getting off on the right foot for the Big 12 in bowl season. Oklahoma State took on the Longhorns in-state rival Texas A&M Aggies in the Texas Bowl at NRG Stadium in Houston on Dec. 27. And Oklahoma State got off to a nice start, with a 14-0 lead out of the gates. But Texas A&M scored 24-unanswered points to ultimately come away with the 24-21 victory to kickoff this loaded weekend of postseason football action.
That just leaves Baylor to take on Georgia in the Sugar Bowl to possibly get the Big 12’s first and only win of the postseason over the SEC. Texas took down Georgia by the final score of 28-21 in the Sugar Bowl to cap the 2018 season.
If Texas beats Utah in the Alamo Bowl and Baylor beats Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, then the Big 12 at least wins their second and third biggest postseason games this year. But the Big 12 is looking really bad against SEC schools like Texas A&M and LSU so far.
