Next Texas football OC Mike Yurcich falls short of Clemson in CFP
The reported next offensive coordinator for Texas football, Mike Yurcich, fell short of beating Clemson in the Playoff on Dec. 28.
Although he put together an impressive season as the passing game coordinator with the Ohio State Buckeyes, the next reported Texas football offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich fell short in the Fiesta Bowl against the Clemson Tigers on Dec. 28. Ohio State faced Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl, which was also the second College Football Playoff Semifinal game that was played on Saturday evening/night.
With Ohio State now eliminated from the College Football Playoff, Yurcich could be officially announced as the next offensive coordinator for the Texas Longhorns football program sooner than anticipated. The report on Twitter from Brett McMurphy of Stadium looked to imply that Yurcich wouldn’t have anything official announced with Texas until Ohio State’s season was over.
That Playoff game against head coach Dabo Swinney and Clemson on Dec. 28 was much better than its Semifinal predecessor. It came right down to the wire, with Clemson ultimately coming out on top by the final score of 29-23. Ohio State did take command early, with a double-digit lead at one point in the first half. But Clemson started to claw back in the second quarter and coming out of the locker room in the second half.
That vaunted Clemson defense also got the best of Ohio State. The explosive plays just weren’t there for the Buckeyes down the stretch. Standout second-year Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields finished up this game with 320 passing yards, but just one touchdown and two picks. He was also limited on the ground since he finished up with just 13 rushing yards.
The Ohio State offense all-around couldn’t muster much after that shocking 68-yard touchdown run against Clemson. Running back J.K. Dobbins did have a solid outing, though, with 174 rushing yards and one touchdown.
After the six-point win over Ohio State this weekend, Clemson moves on to face the streaking No. 1 ranked LSU Tigers in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. LSU took down the Longhorns Big 12 hated rival Oklahoma Sooners in the Peach Bowl in dominant fashion by the final score of 63-28.
Yurcich and the Buckeyes are now done with their season quicker than the Longhorns will be. Texas takes on the No. 11 Utah Utes in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 31, looking to get their eighth win of the season. Head Texas football coach Tom Herman will also be looking to move to a career postseason record of 4-1, if he beats head coach Kyle Whittingham and the Utes in San Antonio on New Year’s Eve.
Moreover, the hire of Yurcich gets Herman both coordinator spots filled for the Longhorns before they even kickoff their bowl game. Yurcich will replace the demoted Tim Beck at offensive coordinator, and Chris Ash is set to replace the fired Todd Orlando as the defensive coordinator.
