Redshirt senior Texas football cornerback Donovan Duvernay appears to be foregoing his final year of eligibility to put his name in the portal.

Yet another member of the Texas football program falls into the NCAA Transfer Portal a little more than one week into the offseason. To-be redshirt senior cornerback Donovan Duvernay is the first name from Texas to put his name in the transfer portal in the 2020 offseason.

The Texas Longhorns football program lost senior breakthrough star wide receiver Devin Duvernay due to lack of eligibility. Duvernay should be an early or middle round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. But his brother now appears to be headed out the door. The Duvernay twins will no longer be suiting up for the Longhorns.

This also leaves the Duvernay twins both transferring at least once. Donovan apparently intends to become a graduate transfer, and get immediate eligibility likely with another FBS program. Coming out of high school as a 5-foot-9 and 175 pound three-star athlete hailing from Saschse, TX, Duvernay also held a number of offers from other notable programs in-state.

Watch out for another in-state program like the Houston Cougars, Baylor Bears, or the North Texas Mean Green to pursue him.

The report that Duvernay intends to enter the transfer portal originally came from the Twitter timeline of ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg on Jan. 8. And Duvernay will be one of the more notable names from the Longhorns program in the transfer portal at the moment.

However, just because Duvernay put his name in the transfer portal doesn’t mean that he will wind up leaving Texas. He’s just going to explore his transfer options to see what’s out there.

Granted, there are usually a rash of transfers of more experienced depth players that might not get that much playing time when a new defensive coordinator comes to town. And that’s the case here with head Texas football coach Tom Herman electing to hire former Rutgers head coach Chris Ash to be the next Longhorns defensive coordinator.

Duvernay is likely to take his talents to a place where he will be utilized right away. He only played in one game during his career on the Forty Acres, racking up one tackle. Wherever he goes next, he’ll have one year of eligibility remaining.

Texas is pretty deep at cornerback heading into the 2020 offseason. And they have a few key pieces locked up in the secondary in their 2020 recruiting class. That includes four-star cornerback Kitan Crawford.
