1. Transition new coordinators in smoothly

The Texas football program made two pretty big splash hirings to fill the two coordinator openings last month. The first hire was the former Rutgers HC Ash. Rutgers let go of Ash after he went 2-14 in the last two seasons in Piscataway, NJ. But that record wasn’t a complete indication of where that program was at, and how much of an uphill battle they faced in the Big Ten of late.

However, Ash seems like a solid hiring to replace the fired Todd Orlando. He brings a more adaptable and aggressive defensive scheme to the table than Orlando did. Since Orlando wasn’t able to adapt over the worse part of the last two seasons, he was feasted on by the better offensive minds in the Big 12.

The former Ohio State Buckeyes passing game coordinator Mike Yurcich replaced the demoted former offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tim Beck last month. Yurcich also had offensive coordinator experience in the Big 12, in six seasons under head coach Mike Gundy with the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

Orlando will now be taking over as the defensive coordinator under head coach Matt Wells with Texas Tech. He won’t be straying too far from the Forty Acres at his next landing spot.

And Beck will be the next offensive coordinator under head coach Dave Doeren with the NC State Wolfpack. Beck was still on the Texas coaching staff as the quarterbacks coach, but he elected to take another Power Five offensive coordinator job elsewhere.
