Texas Football: 3 best bowl games of the decade for Longhorns
1. 2018 Sugar Bowl
Result: 28-21 win over No. 5 Georgia
There’s no question as to which bowl win for the Texas football program was one of the best not just over the course of the last decade, but since the turn of the century. When Texas knocked off the No. 5 ranked Georgia Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day 2019 by the final score of 28-21, the trajectory of this program looked to be sky high.
While Herman and the Longhorns didn’t come back this season with their best result, the 2018 Sugar Bowl was one for the books. Texas came in with a lot of doubt as to how they would handle this spotlight of playing a Georgia team that came one drive away from beating the Alabama Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship Game and making their second straight College Football Playoff appearance.
There was also a lot of chatter that the Dawgs should’ve been the second SEC team in the College Football Playoff for the second straight season. And that discussion seemed to go to the heads of all the Georgia players prior to the kickoff of the Sugar Bowl. Then sophomore quarterback Jake Fromm and running back D’Andre Swift were stifled right from the word go.
The final score of 28-21 was little to no indication of how much the Longhorns controlled this game against Georgia. Ehlinger’s dual-threat ability led to three rushing touchdowns and complete control of the clock. The running back duo of then senior Tre Watson and true freshman Keaontay Ingram was also big for the Longhorns, and showed a brighter future ahead for this backfield.
