A former assistant coach with South Carolina and Florida, Coleman Hutzler, will be the next ST coordinator and LB coach for the Texas football program.

The Texas football program apparently filled one of their most important remaining coaching staff openings beyond head coach Tom Herman on Jan. 14. Since the departure of their special teams coordinator to New Mexico, another major coordinator spot didn’t have many big names arise to fill the position.

On Jan. 14, the Texas Longhorns football program could filling one of their previous assistant coach openings in the form of the former South Carolina Gamecocks assistant Coleman Hutlzler. According to a report from Horns247, Hutzler could be filling the linebackers coach and special teams coordinator roles for the Longhorns.

Moreover, Hutzler filled the same role in Columbia with the South Carolina program under head coach Will Muschamp over the course of the last four seasons. Muschamp himself is a former Texas defensive coordinator, so there is a connection back to the Forty Acres with this hire.

Hutzler is a Las Vegas, NV, native and recruited well during his four years in Columbia. For South Carolina’s 2020 recruiting class, Hutzler was one of the more impressive recruiters on Muschamp’s staff. He landed the third-highest ranked player in their 2020 recruiting class, four-star Clinton inside linebacker Mohamed Kaba.

Since linebacker is one of the weaker position groups in the Longhorns 2020 recruiting class, if you include four-star Highland Park edge rusher Prince Dorbah outside of that group, landing Hutzler is big. He’ll be replacing former Texas defensive coordinator Todd Orlando as the linebackers coach and Derek Warehime as the special teams coordinator.

Hutzler is a fast rising name in the college football coaching ranks. He started his FBS coaching career in this same position with the New Mexico Lobos in 2012. Since then, he’s coached with the Florida Gators, Boston College Eagles, and South Carolina. He’s 35-years-old after the conclusion of the 2019 college football season.

When he started his college football coaching career, Hutzler was an assistant under current Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh at San Diego. He was a recruiting assistant under Harbaugh when he was the head coach of the Stanford Cardinal more than 10 years ago. He’s also coached under head coach Urban Meyer during his time with the Gators.

All in all, Hutzler has learned under a plethora of big names in the college football coaching world. He’ll now link up under former Rutgers head coach Chris Ash, who was recently hired to be the next Texas defensive coordinator. This looks to be a very solid hire for Herman and Ash.
