The only former Texas football player on this list is one that could’ve potentially challenge for playing time next season. To-be senior offensive tackle JP Urquidez found himself in a backup role with the Longhorns for each of the last three years.

Since Texas underwent so many turnover on their coaching staff entering the offseason, it makes sense that at least a few Longhorns like Urquidez entered the transfer portal. Urquidez likely wasn’t projected to land a starting offensive tackle spot next season. But his presence would help keep a deep offensive tackle group for 2020.

Just because Urquidez put his name in the transfer portal, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s guaranteed to leave the Forty Acres. Redshirt freshman backup quarterback Casey Thompson wound up returning to Texas last offseason after he put his name in the transfer portal. Urquidez could do the same if he really buys into the new coaching staff hires, and the retention of offensive line coach Herb Hand and Herman.

But the retention of Urquidez isn’t the most important task on the recruiting trail for Herman and the Longhorns heading into the offseason. It might even be more important for the longevity of Longhorn football to try and retain the true freshman former four-star offensive tackle recruit Javonne Shepherd this offseason. Shepherd might land with the rival Texas A&M Aggies if he leaves the Longhorns.
