Texas Football: 5 most impactful potential transfers early in offseason
By far the most discussed quarterback name in the transfer portal at this point of college football’s offseason is the former Houston Cougars starting star signal caller D’Eriq King. While the Texas football program probably won’t take King out of the transfer portal, if he lands with a Big 12 program they will clearly be impacted.
Coming off an absolutely tremendous 2018 season with Houston under head coach Major Applewhite, King actually had some Heisman hype for his senior campaign. But King didn’t play through most of his last season at Houston, and former West Virginia Mountaineers head coach Dana Holgorsen wasn’t able to implement his scheme with that star quarterback at the helm.
King played in just four games this season, to preserve the final year of his eligibility for wherever he transfers to. That eliminated the momentum he had coming into the 2019 season after tossing 36 touchdowns and just six interceptions in 2018. King only managed six passing touchdowns and two picks before sitting out for the rest of the 2019 season.
The former three-star dual-threat quarterback recruit hailing from Manvel, TX, had offers from 13 schools coming out of high school. The highlights of his offer sheet included the Clemson Tigers, Kansas State Wildcats, Cal Golden Bears, Michigan State Spartans, Washington Huskies, and Texas Tech Red Raiders.
