Texas Football: Longhorns winning Stan Drayton over from Dallas Cowboys, LA Rams
The Texas football program seems to have running backs coach Stan Drayton retained after interest came his way from one (maybe two?) team(s) in the NFL.
Numerous back and forth battles to fill out the coaching staff for the Texas football program carried over to the NFL this offseason. Texas turned over a lot of their coaching staff heading into the postseason, and into the offseason. But head coach Tom Herman appears to be wrapping a lot of his coaching staff changes up well ahead of the beginning of spring camp.
Herman looks to be making it a point for the Texas Longhorns football program to get a new coaching staff set for the bulk of the winter workouts. Now that his team is back on campus in Austin, Herman can start building toward next season.
Most of the Longhorns early enrollees have already arrived on campus too. The fact that the 2020 college football offseason has officially arrived is now all too real.
However, there’s one key position coach that the Longhorns had to battle to keep on the Forty Acres recently. Running backs coach Stan Drayton was receiving reported interest in taking his coaching talents to the NFL to possibly either join the Dallas Cowboys or Los Angeles Rams.
But the Cowboys have apparently found their next running backs coach for the 2020 season in Skip Peete. And now that the Cowboys running backs coach opening is filled, the Rams aren’t looking to pursue Drayton much anymore.
That was a weird report that surfaced on Jan. 15 stating that the Rams and head coach Sean McVay never had any interest in Drayton in the first place. It sounded like they were at least considering him as a coaching candidate earlier this month.
The main source that emerged that showed that the Longhorns are likely to be keeping Drayton in his same role heading into the 2020 offseason came from NFL insider Ian Rapoport. That report on Twitter from Rapoport stated that recently hired Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy planned to interview Peete for the running backs coach job, which he ended up landing earlier this week.
Texas heads into the offseason by now with most of their coaching staff reconfigured. They’ve filled most of the openings for the position coaches, and all three coordinators roles are taken care of. Herman and the Longhorns should be pleased with the staff they’ve reconstructed thus far.
