The Texas football program hauled a big name assistant coach away from the Oklahoma Sooners, by hiring Jay Boulware as the next TE coach and STC.

Another big win in the coaching search to fill out each position group came for the Texas football program earlier this week. Maybe the biggest coaching hire that head coach Tom Herman was able to make for his staff since filling both major coordinator roles came with the reported hiring of former Oklahoma Sooners assistant Jay Boulware.

The announcement that Boulware would be hired to be the next tight ends coach, special teams coordinator, and associate head coach of the Texas Longhorns football program came officially on the Texas Football Twitter page on Jan. 18.

Texas will have an extremely established and respected assistant coach leading the group that includes junior tight end Cade Brewer.

Herman opened up on the hiring of Boulware as the next tight ends coach and special teams coordinator for the Longhorns after the official announcement was made heading into the weekend. Here’s what he had to say on what Boulware could bring to the table for this coaching staff and program all-around.

"He also has extensive experience coaching in the Big 12, having spent a decade in our league, and has worked with teams that have competed at the highest level, including a National Championship team at Auburn in 2010. Jay’s a coach I’ve been aware of for a long time, is very well-respected in coaching circles and certainly knows the recruiting landscape in our state very well. We all were really impressed in our visits with him, know he’ll do a great job building relationships and developing our players, and we’re extremely excited to be bringing him back home to Texas."

This hiring has close ties back to the Longhorns thanks to Boulware’s previous coaching experience in the Big 12 and since he’s an alumni of this football program. He was an offensive tackle for the Longhorns in the early 1990’s.

He’s also coached a number of FBS stops along the way. A few of the more significant programs he’s coached at are the Auburn Tigers, Iowa State Cyclones, Utah Utes, Stanford Cardinal, and Arizona Wildcats.

Boulware was also a graduate assistant and tight ends coach in his first major assistant role with any college football program from 1994-1996.

The last coaching position he held was with the rival Sooners as their running backs coach and special teams coordinator. He held that role with Oklahoma under former head coach Bob Stoops and with current head coach Lincoln Riley.

This is a big get as the Longhorns inch one step closer to finishing out the coaching staff heading into spring camp. Since Texas now officially has their special teams coordinator and tight ends coach positions filled, there’s some pressure off Herman’s shoulder as he rounds out this extreme turnover of his staff.
