Texas Football: 3 most important January 2020 visiting recruits

Among a large number of key prospects visiting Austin this month, who are the most important mainly pertaining to the 2021 Texas football recruiting class?

This coming weekend is a big one for the 2021 Texas football recruiting class especially, with Jan. 17 marking the start for a number of visitors to campus. Since Texas had so much turnover along the coaching staff heading into the 2020 college football offseason, the first major recruiting weekend this month (in terms of visits) meant even more.

Head coach Tom Herman hosted dozens of big time 2021 and 2022 high school prospects (mainly) on campus over the weekend. Among those were current commits in the 2021 Texas recruiting class and some of the biggest remaining targets for that same group and the 2022 class.

This past weekend was essentially the Texas version of most schools’ Junior Day, or what they call the “Elite Day”. This might be the biggest recruiting weekend before spring camp begins, and it can help Herman and his coaching staff get off to a solid start on the trail for this long offseason. Texas definitely needs it given the coaching instability of late and the drop off in the 2021 recruiting class rankings.

Texas also needs to start seeking out the first commitment of their 2022 recruiting class. Other competing Big 12 programs are already building up their 2022 recruiting classes, and Texas doesn’t want to get behind in that regard.

According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2021 Texas recruiting class ranks at No. 3 in the nation and in the top spot in the Big 12. So they’re still doing well for their 2021 recruiting class, despite losing a few key prospects since the end of the 2019 regular season.
