If Texas football wants to continue its success on the recruiting trail at the running back position, then landing a guy like four-star Cy-Fair standout rusher LJ Johnson would be huge. Johnson is a versatile 5-foot-10 and 205 pound running back that ranks as the No. 81 2021 high school prospect in the nation and the No. 4 RB.

The Longhorns landed the No. 2 2020 running back in the nation in their current recruiting class with Salpointe Catholic’s Bijan Robinson. Johnson would be a similar fit in the sense that he’s a big-bodied running back that could be on the field for the bulk of the snaps in Herman’s system. Versatility and offensive knowledge go a long way to really never leaving the field in Herman’s schemes.

Just look at how quick freshman running back Roschon Johnson was able to make an impact out of the backfield for Texas once he converted from quarterback last offseason.

What should appeal to Johnson about the Longhorns right now is the potential he could have in the system ran under former Ohio State Buckeyes passing game coordinator Mike Yurcich. While there’s a lot of creative passing plays involved in Yurcich’s offensive schemes, he likes to keep his side of the ball balanced to keep opposing defenses on their toes.

Johnson already proved his ability to handle high-volume rushing attacks. He can be an every-down back at the college level if he continues on his current path of development. Johnson also reportedly has a good relationship with the recently retained Texas running backs coach Stan Drayton, which could be a big narrative over the course of his recruitment.
