Texas Football: 3 best DT Gerald Wilbon transfer landing spots
More news about the Texas football program losing an experienced player to the NCAA Transfer Portal surfaced this week with Gerald Wilbon possibly leaving.
There were two big losses along the defensive line in the same day for the Texas football program, coming on Jan. 21. Texas lost a pair of senior defensive tackles, Gerald Wilbon and D’Andre Christmas-Giles, to the NCAA Transfer Portal on Tuesday afternoon. This is the time when programs like Texas can lose a waive of players to the transfer portal.
The ability of college football players of any level of eligibility to put their names in the transfer portal and explore their options at least is a game-changer. The trend of the transfer portal essentially becoming a free agency of sorts should only continue to shift the college football landscape year in and year out.
However, head coach Tom Herman saw the turnover of his coaching staff entering the 2020 offseason finally have an impact on certain players putting their names in the transfer portal come into effect now. Texas was sure to have at least a couple of waives of players leave the program.
But the transfer portal is a two-way street and can still play to the benefit of Texas in some regard. Losing a player like Wilbon hurts the veteran presence and depth along the Texas defensive line, but this is something this group can recover from.
A big reason why Wilbon and Christmas-Giles have transfer intentions in the first place is the breakthrough of redshirt freshman defensive tackle Keondre Coburn. Texas finally has more stability and a bright future to anchor the defensive line with Coburn, who racked up two sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss last season.
We should still wish the best to Wilbon and Christmas-Giles wherever they land in the next step of their college football careers. Here’s a look into the three landing spots where the former Texas Longhorns football senior defensive tackle Gerald Wilbon could reasonably fit.
