Texas Football: Collin Johnson a good fit with the Dallas Cowboys?
Would it be a smart move for the Dallas Cowboys to pick up former Texas football wide receiver Collin Johnson in the 2020 NFL Draft?
The 2020 NFL Draft will have two main former Texas football players that come to the forefront. The first is the former senior star 6-foot and 205 pound safety Brandon Jones. And the other is the sizable 6-foot-6 and 220 pound stud wide receiver Collin Johnson, who’s putting on a show at the Senior Bowl drills so far this week.
Jones and Johnson are very likely to be the first two former players from the Texas Longhorns football program off the board in the 2020 NFL Draft. Those two give the Longhorns their best chance to have a first round NFL Draft pick over the course of the last three years.
Between Jones and Johnson, the favorite to be the first former Longhorn off the board in the Draft has to be the latter. Johnson’s size and leaping ability alone makes him a very appealing outside receiver once he reaches his full potential in the NFL. There’s going to be some NFL team that completely buys into what he brings to the table right away.
The question is will that buy in be enough for that team to take Johnson in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft?
One team that comes to mind that regularly takes risks on skill position players like that is the Dallas Cowboys. Jerry Jones doesn’t mind taking risks and footing the bill for it. He did that with former Ohio State Buckeyes superstar running back Ezekiel Elliott more than three years ago, when he was selected in the top five.
Moreover, Jones is very likely to want to provide recently hired head coach Mike McCarthy (replaced former head coach Jason Garrett entering the offseason) with more skill position talent to run his offensive scheme. McCarthy was very successful with the Green Bay Packers offense at his last head coaching stop.
Bringing Johnson into the mix could help the Cowboys bring in a kid that is from this state and would also carry a lot of fan hype. Although Johnson only raked in 38 catches for 558 receiving yards and three touchdowns during his senior campaign, he was rather limited due to a lingering hamstring injury.
If he continues to prove that hamstring injury won’t hold him back heading into his rookie season in the NFL, then scouts will definitely take notice.
The Cowboys have a big draft need at wide receiver. If they don’t re-sign standout former Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver Amari Cooper, then that position group could be very thin. If the stock keeps rising on Johnson come spring time, then he could very well be a great fit with the Cowboys in the 2020 NFL Draft.
