Texas Football: Former OK State WR Tyrell Alexander work for Longhorns?
Could the Texas football program be the next home for the former Oklahoma State Cowboys redshirt junior wide receiver Tyrell Alexander?
Something the Texas football program has yet to try that actually worked out well for other Power Five teams is take a wide receiver out of the NCAA Transfer Portal. With that position group thinning out entering the 2020 offseason, wide receiver could be something to watch on the Forty Acres.
If this were to be the first year where head coach Tom Herman and the Texas Longhorns football program took a real stab at landing a wide receiver out of the transfer portal, it would make a lot of sense. The Longhorns lose a lot of production and experience in the receiving corps between the departures of John Burt, Devin Duvernay, and Collin Johnson.
A potential contributor that could’ve finally stepped up fro the Longhorns next season, third-year wide receiver Jordan Pouncey, is now off the Forty Acres too. Pouncey landed with his brother, four-star cornerback recruit Ethan Pouncey, out of the transfer portal with head coach Dan Mullen and the Florida Gators.
One of the more intriguing names in the transfer portal at wide receiver that the Longhorns could target is the former Oklahoma State Cowboys 6-foot-2 and 185 pound junior Tyrell Alexander. The former three-star athlete recruit Alexander likely was forced out of the key picture for the top Oklahoma State wide receivers with the return of senior star Tylan Wallace to Stillwater for the 2020 season.
Alexander does have good speed and a lot of elusiveness on the outside. But he never really got the chance to prove that amid a slew of injury problems and competition to get playing time in that deep Oklahoma State receiving corps. He only had two career catches for 68 yards in his three years with the Pokes.
What Alexander could bring to the table that the Longhorns don’t have now at wide receiver is a potential replacement Duvernay or Burt that would have more experience in the Big 12 than someone like Marcus Washington or Malcolm Epps. He would also be an insurance policy for the Longhorns if injuries strike like they did for Herman last season.
Texas has yet to enter the portal to fill any positional needs heading into the 2020 college football offseason. Herman hit the transfer portal in the past to fill a skill position need when he landed former Cal Golden Bears running back Tre Watson to fill up the depth chart two years ago.
