Texas Football: Devin Duvernay’s draft stock rising at Senior Bowl
The Texas football program could have a former wide receiver as a fast riser up 2020 NFL Draft boards, with Devin Duvernay having a good Senior Bowl week.
A former star breakthrough wide receiver of the Texas football program Devin Duvernay is making quite an impression late in the week of drills, practice, and showcases at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, AL. Both Duvernay and fellow former Texas wide receiver Collin Johnson stood out during drills and practices at Senior Bowl practice week.
Senior Bowl is a great opportunity for players like Duvernay and Johnson that sit in the midst of a deep NFL Draft class of wide receivers to truly prove what they can do. Both had stellar 2019 seasons, at least when one of those two was actually on the field healthy, combining for nearly 2,000 receiving yards.
Johnson was the one who initially got all the attention from the national media and NFL scouts. His towering 6-foot-6 and 220 pound frame is easy to catch the eyes of scouts, media, and fans, though.
Two of the most impressive prospects coming out of the Texas Longhorns football program for the 2020 NFL Draft are these two wide receivers. Duvernay was one of the nation’s most productive receivers in 2019 and Johnson managed to play well in the seven games where he was healthy and ready to go.
For a good portion of the 2019 campaign, Johnson was limited by a hamstring injury. At least he proved that he should still be an early round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft with his play when he was healthy, racking up more than 550 receiving yards and three touchdown catches in those seven games.
Meanwhile, Duvernay racked up more than 1,400 total yards from scrimmage on 116 touches, good for 10 touchdowns. His production flies under the radar at times, but he was a true breakthrough star last fall.
Where Duvernay slots into this 2020 NFL Draft wide receiver class will be fun to watch until spring arrives. Right now, he should fall as a fourth-to-sixth round pick in the draft. His speed is impressive, but he doesn’t have that skill set to be an outside receiver that so many teams desire nowadays.
Rotoworld didn’t even have Duvernay ranked among their top 15 receivers in the 2020 NFL Draft, but Johnson sat at No. 9. This is something that Duvernay will have to overcome in the NFL Combine and his Pro Day after a good week in the Senior Bowl.
