Texas Basketball: 3 worst losses of 2019-20 season so far
This is where it all fell apart for the Texas basketball program this season. The worst loss in the history of Big 12 play for the Longhorns came in this 38-point catastrophe against the Mountaineers back on Jan. 20. Not only was this one of the worst losses for the Longhorns this season, but it is one of the most lopsided in the Big 12 in general since the start of conference play.
It is unusual for Smart’s teams to get thoroughly embarrassed on the road the way they did against West Virginia. But only one player in the Texas starting five finished up with an offensive rating in triple digits. Ramey, Sims, and sophomore forward Kamaka Hepa finished up with offensive ratings below 70.
What made this loss so much worse for the Longhorns was how they were outrebounded and outscored by West Virginia. Texas couldn’t muster even 30 boards in this game, while the Mountaineers grabbed 50. There were just some ludicrous rebounding and steal rates for the Mountaineers for their individual players.
Freshman big man Oscar Tshiebwe finished up with a rebounding rate above 25 percent and a 4.4 steal rate. Meanwhile junior guard Jermaine Haley finished up with a rebounding rate of 17.6 and nearly a five percent steal rate. Texas couldn’t find their offensive rhythm, as evident in the numbers, and they might as well have not run back on defense.
