Texas Football: LB Juwan Mitchell now out of transfer portal
The Texas football program could be getting back one of the most detrimental losses, with Juwan Mitchell withdrawing his name from the transfer portal.
It seems just as quickly as the former JUCO three-star Texas football transfer linebacker and to-be junior Juwan Mitchell put his name in the NCAA Transfer Portal he reportedly withdrew it. Texas could now be getting the former three-star highly touted JUCO inside linebacker recruit and previous Minnesota Golden Gophers commit back to Austin.
The report that Mitchell could be returning to the Texas Longhorns football program after withdrawing his name from the transfer portal over the weekend came courtesy of 247Sports.
Here’s what 247Sports had to say on the matter of Mitchell withdrawing his name from the transfer portal.
"Texas is no longer set to lose a linebacker with starting experience. A source with knowledge of the situation tells Horns247 that Juwan Mitchell has withdrawn his name from the NCAA transfer portal after putting his name.Multiple sources told Horns247 in the days after Mitchell announced his intentions that withdrawing from the portal and remaining a part of the Texas program was a possibility. It’s now a reality and gives the Longhorns much-needed inside linebacker depth for spring practice and beyond.Mitchell was a late addition to the 2019 recruiting class and made an impact in his debut. Mitchell saw action in 11 games and logged three starts, recording 39 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, four pass breakups and three quarterback hurries."
This is big news for the Longhorns since they will be getting back one of their more experienced linebackers at what is definitely a position of need. With to-be redshirt sophomore linebacker Ayodele Adeoye set to miss spring camp thanks to a lower-body surgery procedure during winter workouts, getting Mitchell back in the mix is huge.
The 6-foot-1 and 240 pound Mitchell will come back to the Forty Acres as one of the few linebackers that started in at least three games with the Longhorns beforehand. The loss of former senior starting Texas linebacker Jeffrey McCulloch could open up a lane for Mitchell to become one of the voices of this defense.
Adeoye and Mitchell will still be two of the most experienced linebackers that head coach Tom Herman and recently hired defensive coordinator Chris Ash get back on that side of the ball for the 2020 season.
