Could the 2020 Texas football recruiting class get to 20 commitments before the end of National Signing Day after landing 4-Star ATH Kelvontay Dixon?

One of the finishing touches to the 2020 Texas football recruiting class arrived on Feb. 4 with the commitment of the former Arkansas Razorbacks four-star athlete pledge Kelvontay Dixon. The brother of the former Texas four-star Carthage running back commit Keaontay Ingram, Dixon is a big addition to the 2020 recruiting class for head coach Tom Herman and Co.

The commitment of Dixon to the 2020 recruiting class for the Texas Longhorns football program came just hours before the dawn of midnight on Feb. 5 (National Signing Day). Dixon was expected to announce his final commitment and signing decision close to National Signing Day. And he did just that.

In the late hours of Feb. 4, Dixon took to his Twitter timeline to commit to Texas to add an 18th name to the class. Texas might have also solidified a spot among the top 10 2020 recruiting classes in the nation, according to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings.

Texas now holds the No. 9 spot in the national class rankings, and the top spot in the Big 12 now ahead of the rival Oklahoma Sooners.

The 6-foot and 180 pound Carthage High School product predominantly played at wide receiver. Dixon was more impactful at wide receiver than he was anywhere else during his latter days playing high school football in Carthage, TX.

Landing the commitment of Dixon gives Texas the nation’s No. 342 2020 high school prospect and the No. 15 athlete. He’s also the No. 49 ranked 2020 high school prospect out of the state of Texas.

Texas was one of the final official visits that Dixon took ahead of announcing his commitment. Head coach Dana Holgorsen and the Houston Cougars actually hosted Dixon for his final official visit ahead of National Signing Day.

Some of the other significant programs that offered Dixon included the Baylor Bears, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Colorado Buffaloes, SMU Mustangs, and TCU Horned Frogs. Although, the three programs that were listed as at least “warm” on 247Sports in the pursuit of Dixon were the Longhorns, Cougars, and UTSA Roadrunners. The fact that UTSA was there in the end to land such a highly touted four-star prospect is pretty impressive on their part.

However, Dixon is going to be one of the more potent skill position threats that could make an impact right away for the Longhorns. He has track speed and good hands. He’s also a versatile route runner that has a good enough leaping ability to either line up as an outside receiver or a burner in the slot.

The 18th commitment to the Longhorns 2020 recruiting class is a big one. Herman and recently hired offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich were able to pull on the family strings to get this big addition ahead of National Signing Day. If Dixon plays at wide receiver, he could see some early playing time as soon as this coming fall.

We’ll see where else National Signing Day leads the Longhorns. Landing the commitment of Dixon is big, and hopefully he will sign his National Letter of Intent early on Feb. 5. He also gets the Longhorns one step closer to solidifying Herman’s third straight top 10 ranked recruiting class in the nation.
