Finally, the coaching staff for the Texas football program made its final hire among the positional coaches with Mark Hagen.

The final hire to complete the turnover of the coaching staff heading into the 2020 offseason for the Texas football was rounded out earlier this week. Head coach Tom Herman made the move to land former Indiana Hoosiers co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach Mark Hagen for Texas.

Now that the Texas Longhorns football program filled the final void among the positional coaches on their staff, Herman can now focus on establishing continuity ahead of spring camp. The Longhorns had their last lull in the position coach hirings for the defensive line, but Hagen is a good get that rounds everything out on the Forty Acres.

The hiring of Hagen to the Longhorns coaching staff was officially announced earlier this week, as the Texas Football Twitter page posted their welcome words. He’ll also be an associate head coach under Herman with the Longhorns.

Hagen will be coaching alongside Oscar Giles for the Longhorns defensive line. Herman is making the move to go back to having two defensive line coaches, like Texas used to have. Giles coached the Texas defensive line for the last three years.

During his time with the Indiana program, Hagen was the defensive line coach from 2016-2019. He was also either an assistant or co-defensive coordinator with the Hoosiers in 2018 and 2019. He was also the special teams coordinator and defensive tackles coach at Indiana in 2011 and 2012.

Between his last two stints on the Indiana coaching staff, Hagen was a linebackers coach and/or the defensive tackles coach with the Texas A&M Aggies from 2013-2015. Hagen was also an assistant on the Purdue Boilermakers coaching staff in various roles from 2000-2010.

The first ever position in the college football coaching ranks for Hagen came with the Hoosiers as a graduate assistant back in 1992. He worked his way up the college football coaching ranks during the 1990’s and early 2000’s until he established himself as a solid assistant/positional coach.

Texas fans should be excited about what Hagen brings to the table for the coaching staff in Austin. He’s a good recruiter as the only commit in the 2021 Indiana recruiting class thus far was brought in by Hagen. That one commit for the Hoosiers is three-star Elkhart Central weak-side defensive end Rodney McGraw.

Indiana was solid in the trenches last season, allowing less than four yards per carry and just over 130 rushing yards per game. They also had a rather deep group in the front seven, with seven players all amassing at least two sacks on the season. There were also a whopping 13 Hoosiers that all had at least three tackles for loss in 2019.
