It is not all that long until the Texas baseball program has the first pitch for their 2020 regular season schedule, on Feb. 14 against Rice.

One of the more anticipated starts to any season on the sports calendar in the University of Texas athletic department is the start of baseball. The Texas baseball program is looking to bounce back from a poor showing in 2019, after the former AP Coach of the Year David Pierce saw his team sit near the bottom of the Big 12 standings most of the way. That poor season for Texas actually came just one year after they won the Big 12 and made it all the way to the College World Series.

Omaha would be a great goal for the Texas Longhorns baseball program by season’s end, but we have to take this year one step at a time. Getting back to Omaha is usually an expectation for such a prominent college baseball program like the Longhorns have. But this year should be considered a success if they made it to a Super Regional.

Get this team back together at a good pace, and maybe make a run at the College World Series in 2021. In the Big 12 media preseason poll for baseball, Texas did come in fifth in the projected standings for the 2020 season. The top team projected out was the Texas Tech Red Raiders, shortly followed by the Oklahoma State Cowboys and TCU Horned Frogs.

Although, Texas did get one vote as the favorite to win the Big 12 this year. But so did the West Virginia Mountaineers, who came in seventh in the Big 12 media preseason poll.

The Longhorns do have first pitch to their 2020 regular season on Feb. 14 against a solid in-state program in the Rice Owls. That will start off a weekend series of three games on the road in Houston against the Owls.

The home opener for Texas comes on Feb. 18 (the following Tuesday) against another in-state foe in the UTSA Roadrunners. Texas will get three opponents at home at Disch-Falk Field that week. The other two includes the Lamar Cardinals and Boise State Broncos. Boise State is the first full weekend series at home for the Longhorns.

Texas is looking to bounce back from that down 2019 season where they posted a record of 27-27 (7-16 Big 12). Taking down Rice in their season opener is a good place to start, and Piece and the Longhorns can start down that road next Friday 7 p.m. CT.
