Texas Football: 3 takeaways from the 2020 recruiting cycle
1. Is Hudson Card the future at quarterback?
Among the stronger position groups in the 2020 Texas football recruiting class is quarterback. Four-star Duncanville athlete/dual-threat quarterback Ja’Quinden Jackson is one of the more electrifying 2020 high school prospects in the nation. The 6-foot-2 and 220 pound Jackson rounded out the top 10 ranked prospects out of the state of Texas for this cycle.
And four-star Lake Travis dual-threat quarterback Hudson Card is no slouch of a signal caller either. Card ranks as the nation’s No. 57 2020 high school prospect and the No. 2 dual-threat quarterback. The 6-foot-2.5 and 180 pound Card will be recovering from a season-ending knee injury from his final year in high school. He is one of the eight early enrollees from the 2020 recruiting class.
This is the last year that star quarterback Sam Ehlinger will be playing on the Forty Acres. He’ll forfeit his college eligibility once the 2020 season is over. It seems like forever that Ehlinger was trying to elevate the Longhorns to new heights. This fall will be his final chance to get Texas to a Big 12 Title and the College Football Playoff.
However, where do the Longhorns turn after Ehlinger’s time in Austin is done?
They could hand the reigns over to either Card or to-be redshirt sophomore backup quarterback Casey Thompson. Card seems like the obvious answer, but Thompson is a good fit with the concepts that both Herman and Yurcich like to run. Don’t forget about the bridge to the 2021 four-star dual-threat quarterback commit Jalen Milroe either.
