2. Roschon Johnson, Sophomore

Current Position: Running Back

Potential Change: Quarterback

The most significant position change that could happen at any spot on either side of the ball for Texas football heading into spring camp involves sophomore running back and former four-star dual-threat quarterback recruit Roschon Johnson. Roschon finished up his freshman campaign with more than 800 total yards from scrimmage and eight touchdowns.

He had 649 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. It wasn’t until later on in the season where Roschon started to make more of an impact in the passing game. But he was one of the smarter and more versatile running backs that the Longhorns had as a freshman over the course of the last decade. His experience coming into college as a quarterback in high school paid dividends after switching to running back.

The real question for Herman and recently hired offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich pertaining to the potential position switch of Roschon will be how much this will benefit the skill positions. Texas doesn’t have much of a buffer of proven running backs. Taking Roschon out of the running back room would mean a lot of pressure put back on the shoulders of to-be junior Keaontay Ingram.

Although, Texas did sign two high school prospects that could/will be running backs in the 2020 recruiting class. There could be a return of the four-star Buford running back 2019 signee Derrian Brown to this position group too. Bring back a healthy and prepared Brown along with Ingram and two more incoming freshmen, and it does make more sense to move Roschon back to quarterback.
