Media outlets are soon to enter the famed “list season”. Where did 247Sports rank Texas football senior Sam Ehlinger on their list of the top 10 2020 QB’s?

The 2020 college football season will be here before we know it, and there will be a lot of buzz surrounding the Texas football program as usual throughout the offseason. Texas brings back a lot of talent and starting experience from their 2019 team, including to-be senior star quarterback Sam Ehlinger.

If the Texas Longhorns football program gets Ehlinger to the point of being named a Heisman finalist this year, then this team could find itself in contention for a spot in the College Football Playoff and a Big 12 Title. The Big 12 Championship Game and College Football Playoff contention completely eluded head coach Tom Herman and the Longhorns last season.

A recent post by 247Sports gave their thoughts on the top returning quarterbacks for the 2020 college football season with the start of spring camp almost upon us. That list from 247Sports ranked Ehlinger among the top 10 quarterbacks in their opinion returning across the entire country this year.

Ehlinger fell in line at No. 3 among the top 10 quarterbacks in the nation. He ranked just ahead of the Iowa State Cyclones to-be junior quarterback Brock Purdy. The two quarterbacks he ranked behind were Trevor Lawrence of the Clemson Tigers and Justin Fields of the Ohio State Buckeyes. Lawrence rang in at No. 1, and Field just behind him.

Here’s what 247Sports had to say on their placement of Ehlinger on this list.

"We’re watching one of the top quarterbacks in program history star for the Longhorns, but he still feels underappreciated nationally. He’ll back back for his final season in 2020 with one last opportunity to get Texas back to the forefront as a national title contender. Ehlinger’s best has come in spotlight opportunities against nationally-ranked competition, the mark of a true competitor. The guy has accounted for 80 touchdowns over his last 27 games, the second-most in college football during that stretch (Joe Burrow, 88)."

Ehlinger is coming off a junior campaign where he registered 3,663 passing yards, 32 passing touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, to go along with a passer efficiency rating of 151.8. A lot of the production Ehlinger registered last season were actually career bests. His junior season was overshadowed by the fact that the Longhorns went from winning 10 games to just eight.

Other significant names on this list from 247Sports included the former Longhorns quarterback and SMU Mustangs starting redshirt senior Shane Buechele (No. 10), USC Trojans sophomore Kedon Slovis, and North Carolina Tar Heels sophomore Sam Howell. It is weird to see two Texas starting quarterbacks from the last two years on this list together.
