Texas Football: 3 injuries to watch for Longhorns ahead of spring camp
The best news that the Texas football program could get coming out of the 2020 offseason in terms of injury recoveries is the former four-star Buford, GA, native running back recruit Derrian Brown returning to game action. Brown suffered a scary stroke last offseason that sidelined him for the entirety of the 2019 calendar year.
But Brown could be returning for the Longhorns in 2020, he just likely isn’t going to participate in full pads practice and drills in spring camp. Brown will have to inch his way back slower than that. Maybe we’ll see him suiting up in full pads for the Longhorns come the start of fall camp. He didn’t get any actual game reps in 2019, so he’ll be coming in cold.
The 5-foot-10 and 180 pound Brown will have a long offseason in front of him working with strength and conditioning coach Yancy McKnight and getting used to this new scheme under newly hired offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich. There’s going to be a lot of changes, but this offense should still strive to be one of the more balanced in the Big 12.
If Texas goes through with the switch of to-be sophomore Roschon Johnson from running back to quarterback, then that would open up a path to more playing time this fall for Brown. But he’ll still have to prove he’s ready to get to get more carries this fall than the likes of junior Keaontay Ingram, freshman Bijan Robinson, and/or senior Daniel Young.
