Texas Football: 3 biggest positions of need for Longhorns in 2020
Where does the Texas football program need the most help on the depth chart on both sides of the ball heading into spring camp?
There aren’t very many head coaches in the Big 12 that are as good at reshuffling their depth chart to maximize on hand talent as Tom Herman with the Texas football program. He’s really good at maximizing the versatile players he has on hand to minimize depth inefficiencies on both sides of the ball.
In fact, position changes were one of the most notable storylines heading into the offseason for Texas. Spring camp will show an interesting development at how younger players are growing in their new roles. Texas will have a largely followed course of drills and scrimmages for spring camp compared to the rest of the Big 12’s programs this offseason.
There’s not that much turnover among the starters on both sides of the ball for Texas heading into the offseason. But they did lose a number of key skill position players due to lack of eligibility following the 2019 season. That includes star Texas Exes now like wide receivers Collin Johnson and Devin Duvernay. Texas does lose a couple of key leaders on the defensive side of the ball too with departures like safety Brandon Jones and linebacker Jeffrey McCulloch.
Texas did land a quality 2020 signing class, but there wasn’t an overwhelming number of commits. This 2020 recruiting class was more about retention and quality than it was quantity. All of the coaching staff turnover following the conclusion of the regular season caused Texas to have to fight and claw to keep as much of their 2020 recruiting class together as they could.
Here’s a look at the three biggest positions of need depth-wise for the Texas Longhorns football program heading into spring camp.
