1. Linebacker

Maybe the thinnest position for the Texas football program heading into spring ball is linebacker. There’s not really any part of the linebacking corps that is going to be ultra-deep in spring camp. The only one that could’ve been that deep in spring ball was the rover position. But to-be redshirt sophomore Ayodele Adeoye will miss spring camp thanks to a lower-body injury.

Granted newly hired Texas defensive coordinator Chris Ash will change up the looks of the linebacking corps a bit so that the lack of depth could be covered up. Texas is likely to have the converted safety and former four-star recruit DeMarvion Overshown getting first-team looks at the WILL linebacker spot.

A big scare hit the Longhorns when the former top-rated JUCO insider linebacker recruit in the nation Juwan Mitchell put his name in the transfer portal. But similar to redshirt freshman quarterback Casey Thompson last year, Mitchell got back to the Forty Acres very fast. He will be a key for this linebacker room, and the projected starter up the middle.

To-be junior Joe Ossai is the projected starter at the other spot in this position group. But other names to watch include the former walk-on (who started in the Alamo Bowl win) Cort Jacquess and to-be redshirt freshman David Gbenda. Landing a linebacker out of the transfer portal might not be the worst decision for the Longhorns this year, though.
