Quarterbacks

Shane Buechele (SMU)

The most successful former Texas football player that took his talents elsewhere last season was the redshirt junior SMU Mustangs quarterback Shane Buechele. It was known that Buechele was likely to make an immediate impact under head coach Sonny Dykes with that fast-paced SMU offense.

But no one saw coming the rise to national prominence that SMU experienced throughout much of the 2019 regular season. Buechele was one of the best Group of Five quarterbacks last year, tallying up 3,929 passing yards, 34 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. His passing stats actually eclipsed that offer junior Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger.

Buechele also added more than 100 rushing yards and two scores on the ground last season.

Cameron Rising (Utah)

Former four-star pro-style quarterback recruit Cameron Rising was one of the more highly touted at the position in recent memory for the Longhorns. Rising was one of the best four-star pro-style quarterback prospects in the nation for the 2018 recruiting cycle. It only took one year, though, for him to take his talents elsewhere. He wound up landing with the Utah Utes.

A quarterback battle should ensure under head coach Kyle Whittingham with the Utes this offseason. One name to watch in that likely quarterback battle is Rising. He didn’t play during the 2019 season since he didn’t get immediate eligibility from the NCAA. But Utah did face Texas in the 2019 Alamo Bowl.

The other competitors to watch in that Utah quarterback battle are to-be senior Drew Lisk and redshirt junior Jason Shelley.
