Texas Baseball: Horns stay undefeated, beat UTSA in home opener
The roll that Texas baseball started out the 2020 regular season on continued on Feb. 18 with a four-run win over UTSA in their home opener.
About as good of a start to the regular season as the fans could hope for is what the Texas baseball program achieved through the first four games. Texas hit the road to take on the Rice Owls in their regular season opener. Rice was also the first weekend series for Texas. A series sweep of Rice helped to restore some confidence in what head coach David Pierce could do with this ball club.
On Feb. 18, the Texas Longhorns baseball program turned their attention to taking on the UTSA Roadrunners in their home opener this year at Disch-Falk Field. The Disch was ready to go for this home opener, as the Longhorns wasted no time out of the gate. The Longhorns needed a win here to keep their undefeated record, and move to 4-0 on the season.
Cole Quintanilla got the start for the Longhorns against the Roadrunners, but didn’t have the best first inning. He gave up one run in the first inning. Quintanilla had two earned runs in total tonight in four innings pitched. He also added five strikeouts and gave up four total hits.
The win wound up going to Tristan Stevens, his second on the season so far. Stevens had two innings on the mound, and didn’t give up any earned runs. He gave up just one hit, but didn’t strike anyone out.
Freshman catcher Silas Ardoin was one of the more highly touted Texas baseball recruits in recent memory, and he came through in a big way with his bat in this game. Ardoin knocked in two of the six Texas runs. He also had two hits and two runs himself.

Duke Ellis went 1-for-3 and added another run. Two of the better plays of the night went to Trey Faltline. Standing out with his glove all night, Faltline saved the Longhorns on a couple occasions.
Next up for Texas is another home game at the Disch on Feb. 19 against the Lamar Cardinals. This was a one game series against UTSA and Texas will only have one against Lamar too. Their next weekend series comes at home against the Boise State Broncos out of the Mountain West Conference.
