Moving to 5-0 on the season with a win over the Lamar Cardinals, the Texas baseball program heads into their second weekend series the right way.

A solid start to the 2020 college baseball regular season continued on the Forty Acres on Feb. 19. Prior to getting nearly a full two day break heading into a three-game weekend series with the Boise State Broncos out of the Mountain West Conference, the Texas baseball program had to finish off the Lamar Cardinals at home at Disch-Falk Field on Wednesday evening.

Head coach David Pierce and the Texas Longhorns baseball program carried a perfect 4-0 record into Wednesday’s showdown against Lamar after knocking off the UTSA Roadrunners at the Disch in their home opener. That win over UTSA came by the final score of 6-2 on Tuesday night. And Texas came out of the weekend with a season-opening three-game series sweep of the Rice Owls.

But all three of those wins over the Owls came on the road in Houston.

This was a big letdown spot for the Longhorns as one of their more significant three-game series during the non-conference schedule loomed large for the coming weekend. But Texas didn’t get caught looking ahead as they took down a Lamar team that struggled with their bats all game long.

The win for Texas over Lamar went to Kolby Kubichek, who went three scoreless innings pitched on the mound and added three strikeouts. Right fielder Austin Todd and shortstop Trey Faltline led the way for the Longhorns bats. Todd finished up with one hit and three runs batted in on the day. His one hit went for a double.

Faltline had yet another solid outing, as he tied for the team lead with two runs and two hits in two at-bats.

Meanwhile, the only earned run on the night was allowed by Will Swope. Kubichek got the start, and Owen Meaney went for another three scoreless innings on the mound. Kubichek and Meaney combined to toss a two-hit shutout, with six strikeouts, as they put together a great performance on Wednesday evening.

Texas definitely won this game in the first six innings. The Longhorns had a three-run second inning and two in the sixth. That all compiled while Kubichek and Meaney were shutting out the Cardinal bats.

This win moves the Longhorns record to a perfect 5-0 on the season. Texas will take to the field again at the Disch on Friday, Feb. 21, to open the three-game weekend series against Boise State. First pitch will be at 7 p.m. CT against Boise State on Friday night.
