There could be a big boost at a position of need in the 2021 Texas football recruiting class by landing 3-Star LBJ DB Andrew Mukuba.

The 2021 Texas football recruiting class could be thin in the secondary by all indications. Texas was good to get on the defensive backs in the 2020 signing class prior to National Signing Day (Feb. 5). The strength of their 2020 recruiting class in the defensive backfield was at safety, though. Texas’ highest ranked defensive back commits beyond four-star cornerback Kitan Crawford were two four-star safeties.

But losing out on three-star Duncanville cornerback Ennis Rakestraw to the Mizzou Tigers was not a great look for the Texas Longhorns football program. Since the Longhorns lost out on the commitment of Rakestraw in the 2020 recruiting class, they need to bolster the cornerback position for the 2021 group.

One way that the Longhorns can look for the 2021 recruiting class is with three-star LBC and Austin, TX, native safety/cornerback Andrew Mukuba. As he was recently on campus on the Forty Acres for a visit, Mukuba appears to have the Longhorns rising in his eyes.

The versatility that Mukuba brings to the table as a 5-foot-11 and 180 pound defensive back that can play at cornerback or safety could be someone that is very valuable to Texas’ 2021 recruiting class. Mukuba opened up on how Texas appears to him following his visit to campus prior to the dead period.

Here’s what Mukuba had to say about how various college programs stand in his eyes during the dead period, with Mike Roach of 247Sports.

"The new 247Sports four-star prospect picked up a new star this week and a bunch of offers. Mukuba spoke with Horns247 last weekend during the Pylon 7-on-7 tournament in Fort Worth, and he listed a few of the schools he’s hearing from.“I’m hearing from OU, Alabama, Georgia, and Texas,” he said.Mukuba visited Texas prior to the dead period, and he spent time with Chris Ash and assistant defensive back Kyle Coats.“It was great,” he said. “I like the coaches and I really like the energy over there. I talked to coach Ash and coach (Kyle) Coats.”Mukuba went over film with Ash during the visit, and he feels like the safety position will be a bigger part of the defense going forward.“I feel like he’s going to bring something special to Texas,” he said. “He showed me what they’re going to be doing and they will be getting their DBs even more involved on the defensive side of the ball.”"

That part of the 247Sports report shows that four schools that could be rising to the top for Mukuba are the Oklahoma Sooners, Georgia Bulldogs, Alabama Crimson Tide, and the Longhorns. But his 247Sports recruiting profile only lists Alabama and the TCU Horned Frogs as “warm” at the moment.

The only 247Sports expert Crystal Ball Prediction in for Mukuba right now does have him landing with the Arkansas Razorbacks in the SEC West. Other significant offers he holds are from the Boise State Broncos, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Ole Miss Rebels, SMU Mustangs, Tennessee Volunteers, and Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Mukuba ranks as the nation’s No. 363 2021 high school prospect and the No. 52 prospect out of the state of Texas. The 247Sports ranking is much higher than his composite. He ranks inside the top 200 2021 high school prospects in the nation (which classifies him as a four-star recruit) in his 247Sports ranking.
