Texas Football: WR coach thinks Ehlinger is one of the best players
Texas football wide receivers coach Andre Coleman had some great words for senior QB Sam Ehlinger before spring ball begins.
Recently promoted Texas football wide receivers coach Andre Coleman definitely had some high marks for to-be senior starting quarterback Sam Ehlinger early this week. The former Kansas State Wildcats co-offensive coordinator under ex-head coach Bill Snyder gave Ehlinger this high praise before he even gets to see him take the field for spring camp.
Although the star quarterback Ehlinger isn’t coming off his most consistent season of his three starting for the Texas Longhorns football program, he did break more records in 2019. The Longhorns still got to the point of winning the Alamo Bowl over the No. 11 Utah Utes by the final score of 38-10 behind Ehlinger’s direction. He totaled more than 270 total yards and four touchdowns in that Alamo Bowl win over Utah.
Those aforementioned praises that Coleman had for Ehlinger came over the weekend as the Longhorns prepare for spring camp. Here’s what Coleman had to say on this program’s starting quarterback in the midst of the 2020 offseason.
"“We had this conversation, and I told him I thought that Sam Ehlinger is one of the best football players,” Coleman said. “That’s physical, that’s mental, that’s toughness, that’s leadership, that’s competiveness — he is one of the best that I have ever been around, and I sincerely believe that.”"
This conversation with Coleman reportedly also saw him discuss some former players he coached up during his time as a co-offensive coordinator at Kansas State, including quarterback Jake Waters.
Coleman will be trying to coach up the position group that could take Ehlinger’s game to another level during his final season on the Forty Acres. Ehlinger has one year left as the Texas starting quarterback, but he’s losing his top two receiver targets from last season’s team. Collin Johnson and Devin Duvernay are starting their stint in the 2020 NFL Draft Combine while Coleman is preparing for his first year as the Texas wide receivers coach.
Coleman is replacing the former Texas co-wide receivers coaches Drew Mehringer and Corby Meekins. Mehringer was fired prior to the Alamo Bowl win over the Utah Utes and Meekins was demoted prior to taking another assistant coaching role elsewhere.
Ehlinger is coming off a junior season where he was still able to post 39 total touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He did double the number of picks he tossed from his breakthrough sophomore season in 2019, but that means that there’s just more strides he can make this offseason.
