Texas Football: 247Sports names Sam Ehlinger best Big 12 quarterback
You can now add 247Sports to the list of media outlets that feel as if the Texas football program has the best returning Big 12 QB this year.
The start of the 2020 college football regular season is still a ways away. And the Texas football program will continue to have to patiently wait through what will be a lengthy 2020 offseason. The good news is that they have a lot of returning production, a rejuvenated coaching staff under Tom Herman, and a good incoming 2020 signing class. Texas has a great chance to start the fall off on the right foot this year.
Another huge reason why fans of the Texas Longhorns football program should be very excited for what’s to come in 2020 is the hype around to-be senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger. This offense should be very potent with Ehlinger leading the way along with former Ohio State Buckeyes passing game coordinator Mike Yurcich as the next offensive coordinator. Texas could have one of the most productive and consistent offenses in the Big 12 this fall.
A lot of the fortunes of this Longhorns team this fall will ride on how Ehlinger is able to do against opposition like the Oklahoma Sooners, LSU Tigers, Baylor Bears, Oklahoma State Cowboys, etc. There’s little leeway in the schedule for Texas this year. They even have to face the defending National Champion LSU on the road in Baton Rouge in Week 2.
Texas should have the quarterback advantage this year, though, with Ehlinger returning to the Forty Acres and the reigning Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow headed to the NFL Draft. Considering Ehlinger came just shy of totaling 40 touchdowns last season, the hype building around him isn’t all that surprising.
Not only does Texas look to have the quarterback advantage in the matchup against LSU this year, they could in almost every Big 12 game. According to a ranking done by Barton Simmons of 247Sports, Ehlinger is the best returning quarterback in the Big 12 this year. That places him ahead of other Big 12 quarterbacks like Iowa State’s Brock Purdy, Baylor’s Charlie Brewer, and Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler.
Texas went 8-5 (5-4 Big 12) behind Ehlinger’s guidance last year, which ended with an Alamo Bowl win over the No. 11 ranked Utah Utes by the final score of 38-10. They should come into the 2020 season with a top 25 ranking in the initial AP and Coaches Poll.
