Spring camp is going to be huge for the entire defensive back position group for the Texas football program. This season, the Longhorns have the chance to have the most potent secondary in the Big 12. With the addition of the former Rutgers Scarlet Knights head coach Chris Ash to replace Todd Orlando as the next defensive coordinator, this secondary is going to look much different this fall.

No other Big 12 program will have as many former five-star recruits at the safety position than the Longhorns will this season. Just from the 2018 and 2019 recruiting classes alone, Texas brings back former five-star signees such as to-be sophomore Tyler Owens, and juniors Caden Sterns and B.J. Foster.

The most unknown of that trio is Owens. While he played in six games last season, he didn’t make the impact anticipated given how highly touted he was during his recruitment. The 6-foot-2 and 205 pound Owens had just eight total tackles in those spots of six different games he played in last season.

The “Final247” recruiting rankings for Owens held him out as the nation’s No. 24 2019 high school prospect and the No. 3 at his position. The Plano East High School product will be looking at the road to a more significant role, especially if the injuries continue to pile up. Owens and former four-star signee Chris Adimora are definitely the two breakout candidates in the defensive backfield to watch for the Longhorns from the 2019 recruiting class.
