Maybe the most obvious breakout candidate for the Texas football program in the receiving corps is the rising sophomore former Gatorade National High School Football Player of the Year Jake Smith. During his true freshman season, Smith racked up 283 total yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns on 27 touches.

When Smith received those Gatorade Player of the Year honors for the 2018 high school football season, he saw his recruiting stock rise. But it pretty much steadied out for the remainder of his recruitment until he signed his National Letter of Intent to play on the Forty Acres. He was also about as close as it gets to a five-star prospect.

Smith ranked among the top 50 2019 high school prospects in the nation and the No. 8 wide receiver. He also ranked as the No. 2 prospect out of Arizona. Landing Smith helped to continue a recruiting pipeline in the state of Arizona that the Longhorns had to be hoping would stick around through the 2020 class. But Texas missed out on signing five-star Saguaro cornerback Kelee Ringo at the hands of the Georgia Bulldogs.

Moreover, Texas did keep the recruiting pipeline alive in Arizona when they signed five-star Salpointe Catholic running back and Tucson, AZ, native Bijan Robinson. The skill positions could be loaded with talents out of Arizona this fall. Given his speed and usually reliable hands, Smith is definitely a potential star that could shine in 2020.
